  • lessons (or what 2009 has taught me thus far)

    1. "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans". - John Lennon
The moral of this story is you should never make the stupid mistake of believing that you know what life is going to bring you. This isn't necessarily bad, it just means life is utterly unpredictable and you should be flexible to changes.

    2. "This too shall pass"
This lesson can be viewed in a positive or negative light, but ultimately are the same truth. It is a reminder that our lives are only temporary and thus everything that happens in our lives are also temporary. The younger we are, it seems, the less we understand this concept. For a 5-year-old boy, a broken crayon may be the end of the world and the young child will cry and be terribly upset about it for a while. A 15-year-old would think the crayon is a stupid thing to be sad about. By the same token, a 15-year-old will cry over a two month relationship that ended in a broken heart while a 50-year-old woman will think that's trivial because she is dealing with a broken marriage.
Get it? That too shall pass.

    3. "Always say always"
Or never say: never say never.  We're still finding ourselves and discovering what we want. This means that although you may say "I will never drink", you may find yourself stumbling out a club incredibly tipsy next year. A lesbian may say "I will never date boys" and find herself happily married to Mr.Right in five years. The point here is that people will change and its best not to be too decided on something (such as i will never have children) lest it comes back to bite you (you end up a single mother of three).

    4. "An object in motion, stays in motion" - Newton
We have a tendency to repeat the same mistakes. Even though, we think we "learned" from past mistakes, we tend to repeat history over and over again. It has something to do with being accustomed to our comfort zone and an inability to accept (even constructive) criticism from others.

    5. "Everyone has a story"
Everyone from your father to your doctor to your friend from middle school that you lost contact with to the homeless man downtown has a story. Each person has accomplishments and dreams. Has dealt with loss and disappointment. Possibly has endured tragic events. We all deal with the same human emotions.

    6. "You only live once"
For some this may mean you should do more. Be more spontaneous, spend that extra cash (money is meant to be spent), meet more people and get out more. For some this may mean, slowing down. It may mean party less and work harder, be more considerate of yourself and those around you, or stop and smell the roses. Either way, you only have one shot, one life so go for it.

    7. "Youth is wasted on the young"
Ties in with no.6. You're only young once so make use of the time, energy, and other resources you have. Study abroad for instance! At what other point in your life will you be able to take 3 months- 1 year to go live in another country without having to find work there or be burdened with other responsibilities?

    8. "The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know" - Albert Einstein
Seems I have learned all these life lessons recently. For instance, I realized how terribly selfish teenagers are. (This of course includes myself). It is an age where we think the world is only about us, every little disappointment becomes a complete tragedy, and we are just so unbelievably selfish. However, a couple years ago I had not realized this. So although I'm slightly wiser, I also acknowledge that there is so much more I don't know.
